  1. SIMS, Karachi, is committed to attracting highly qualified individuals solely on merit to join its graduate programs.
  2. We conduct admissions in accordance with the admissions policies developed by the academic unit offering the program and approved by the Academic Council.
  3. Our programs aim to promote academic excellence, innovation, and leadership qualities. The ideal candidate will show a strong potential for success, both academically and professionally.
  4. Our admissions process is fair and transparent and ensures all applicants have an equal chance to compete and enter our programs.
  5. We do not discriminate in offering access to our programs based on factors such as religion, nationality, gender, gender identity or disabilities.
  6. Our programs are open to national and international students.
  7. This policy establishes the framework for the admission processes for all graduate programs currently offered by SIMS, Karachi.

2. Preamble

  1. SIMS, Karachi in partnership with SIUT is committed to providing high-quality graduate education and training that nurtures academic excellence and promotes professional growth. The clinical graduate programs currently offered include MS in Adult Urology, MS in Pediatric Urology, MD Pulmonology, MD in Nephrology, and MD in Gastroenterology.
  2. Admissions to the clinical programs are offered twice in a calendar year.
  3. The non-clinical graduate programs include a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Bioethics and a Master's in Bioethics (MBE).

3. Aims

  1. SIMS, Karachi aims to attract and select the best candidates for its graduate programs by providing timely and transparent communication to the applicants on Ission requirements and selection processes.
  2. We are committed to upholding the integrity of the admissions processes by strictly following preapproved criteria of eligibility and admissions that are nondiscriminatory and ensure equal opportunities for all applicants.

4. Scope

  1. This policy applies to the applicants (candidates), faculty, administrators, and staff associated with the admissions processes at the Institute.
    Note: For the purposes of this Policy, an applicant or candidate is defined as any person who has applied for admission to a graduate program at SIMS, Karachi and is not yet enrolled as a student.

5. Applicants with Disabilities

  1. Our programs are open to individuals with disabilities.
  2. Applications assessment criteria are same as for other applicants. However, there may be instances where health and safety considerations, professional requirements, or the program's capacity to provide facilities for a disability needs to be taken into account.
    The Admissions Department will handle each case individually.

6. Admissions Process

a. Director Admissions is responsible for coordinating and managing the admissions to all academic programs at SIMS, Karachi. The Admissions Office manages the following processes:

  1. Call for Admissions through newspaper and electronic publishing
  2. Receiving Applications
  3. Evaluating transcripts and degrees
  4. Organizing and Administering the Admissions Tests
  5. Digital Evaluation of Admissions Tests
  6. Announcement of Admissions Test Results
  7. Arranging admission interviews by the interview panels.
  8. Analyzing data related to admissions trends, yield rates, and demographic information to-update future policies and plans.

7. Procedures

    7.1 Call for Applications
  1. Academic sessions of clinical programs at SIMS, Karachi start in January and August. The exact start date is given by the academic unit offering the program.
  2. Admissions are announced through national newspapers (English, Urdu, and Sindhi) and SIMS, Karachi, and SIUT official websites and social media handles, generally three months before the start of the academic session.
    7.2 How to Apply
  1. Submit your application through the SIMS, Karachi online Admission Application portal before the deadline.
    1. Please note that the portal does not accept late applications.
    2. We do not accept applications submitted in person, by courier or postal service.
  2. Attach copies of all relevant documents, transcripts, and certificates to your application form to support the information in your application.
    1. Please be aware that your application is complete and valid only if official proofs/documents are attached.
  3. Make sure that you fill out the required information. We will not process incompletely filled forms.
  4. Please be advised that presenting incorrect/false/forged information or document(s) to meet eligibility requirements will result in disqualification of the application and cancellation of admission if admitted.
  5. Admissions requirements vary for different programs, so kindly review the specific program you are applying for.
    1. You must meet the PM&DC and HEC eligibility requirements to enter the program.
    7.3 Eligibility Criteria
  1. MBBS with one-year house job from a PM&DC recognized institution.
  2. Valid PM&DC Registration
  3. Postgraduate experience duration requirements vary for different programs. Please review the requirements of the program you are applying for. Program specific details are available on web link.
  4. Foreign graduates are required to possess PM&DC equivalence certificate at the time of applying.
  5. Basic communication skills in English and Urdu, and ability to write in English is a prerequisite for all candidates.
  6. Please note that admission criteria for all applicants regardless of nationality are same.
    7.4 Required Documents
  1. Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC)
  2. Matric/O Level, Inter/A Level; Certificates or Equivalence Documents
  3. MBBS degree with detail marks certificates of all Professional Exams
  4. MBBS attempts certificates of all Professional Exams
  5. NEB pass certificate (for foreign graduates)
  6. House Job certificates
  7. PMC valid permanent registration certificate
  8. Experience Certificates (if any)
    7.5 Written Admissions Test
  1. Applicants to MS and MD appear for a written admission test.
  2. The written test compromises of fifty (50) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with one best answer.
    1. 50% of the questions evaluate your knowledge of basic medical sciences.
    2. 50% of the questions are from either general surgery or general medicine, depending on the program you have applied for.
  3. The minimum passing marks required are 50% or above.
  4. Please note that acquiring minimum passing marks does not ensure admission to the program.
  5. The Institute retains the right to select the most suitable candidate based on a range of selection criteria, including academic records, written test results, and interview assessments.
    7.6 Admissions Interview
  1. Applicants who pass the written test must appear in an interview with a panel of subject experts. The panel comprises 5-7 members and is chaired by the Dean.
  2. The interview is not just about evaluating your academic knowledge. It is intended to assess your personal qualities that are our important considerations in selecting the best candidates to pursue advanced medical studies at SIMS-SIUT.
  3. For example, your motivation to pursue graduate studies indicates your commitment and seriousness of purpose. Some of our essential considerations in the final selection process include your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, resourcefulness and initiative skills, professionalism, empathy, leadership abilities and potential for future contributions.
    1. Final admissions decisions are the responsibility of the concerned Dean. The Dean may delegate in writing the decision making to Associate Deans, Head of Departments/ Chairpersons.
7.7 Announcement of Final Results

The admission results are officially announced on the SIMS, Karachi website. Additionally, results are sent to applicants via email or WhatsApp.

7.8 Appeals

Applicants denied admission may appeal the decision only if they feel that the denial violates subsection iii, Section 1 of the Admissions Policy (discrimination based on religion, nationality, gender, gender identity or disabilities).

8. Admissions (Entry) Test Paper

  1. Test papers are prepared by a committee of concerned faculty members/ subject experts appointed by the Director of Admissions in consultation with the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  2. The Department of Medical Education provides necessary guidance to the committee members in developing questions

9. Procedures – NON-CLINICAL PROGRAMS

CBEC-SIUT offers a two year Masters in Bioethics (MBE) program and a one-year Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Biomedical Ethics program. Both programs are offered every other year.
